Every day, there are many different lifting operations carried out in various industries. Lifting is always associated with risk and there are therefore high demands on both the user and the supplier of lifting products. Although the products are approved and certified, improper handling and misapplication of the products can create dangerous situations.
Safe lifting starts with choosing the right equipment. Lifting products are strongly regulated by European Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, which sets high demands on suppliers of lifting products concerning:
• Requirements on product performance
• Product marking
• Technical product documentation
• Traceability of the products through the value chain
To prevent accidents and injuries associated with lifting, the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket) has developed regulations, which the employer is required to be aware of and to follow. Read more about this in:

- Risk assessment
Always do a risk assessment and if necessary make accurate actions before using the lifting equipment.
- Correct lifting equipment
Ensure that the right equipment is selected for the application and that it meets applicable directives and standards. The chosen equipment must also be provided with technical documentation.
Employers should make sure that the employees using lifting products has sufficient theoretical and practical knowledge for safe use of the equipment. This knowledge should be documented. Employees must comply with current regulations and instructions.
- Maintenance and inspection
Lifting equipment must be maintained regularly and undergo inspection before being used. The lifetime of lifting equipment is limited and depends on the application. Obsolete materials should be discarded and replaced.
- Working environment
In accordance to the Work Environment Authority regulations the employer has the main responsibility and shall together with the employees and safety inspectors develop procedures to ensure a good working environment. The employer must implement all necessary measures to prevent accidents. The employer must work systematically with working environment issues and is therefore required to consider, implement and follow up activities for the prevention of accidents and bad health.

Safe lifting requires approved and certified products, proper use and inspection of the lifting equipment before use.
Selecting lifting equipment
Lifting accessories shall be chosen according to:
• the load to be handled
• the grip points or lifting eyes to be used
• prevailing weather conditions and
• the way in which the load is strapped or slung.
Lifting accessories which are not dismantled after use shall be clearly marked so as to inform the user of the characteristics of the equipment.

Selecting lifting chains
Lifting chains are available in different grades and standards where the choice most often is based on the area of use. It is important to handle the chains correctly and to regularly inspect deformation, wear and other risks for breakage.

Selecting soft lifting slings
Soft lifting slings are mainly used without other lifting components although they can, when needed, with advantage be used in combination with grade 80, grade 100 or other approved lifting components. Soft lifting slings produced in accordance with EN 1492-1 and -2 are color-coded for working load limit (WLL).
