Cargo securing in containers – One-way securing

Containers are increasingly being used as load carriers. By using a container the risk of the goods moving during transport is reduced as it can be blocked by the stable container walls. Cargo shifting can damage the cargo, but also, in a worst case scenario, create chain reactions that put both the ship and its crew at risk. If the cargo shifts this can cause serious injury during unloading if it falls out when the doors open.

In addition to mass forces, another major problem is moisture, which can cause rust, mould and damage to packagings. 10% of all transit damage in containers is moisture-related.

Insurance companies and inspection authorities estimate that the cargo in at least half of all containers is inadequately secured. The value of related cargo damage is estimated at a massive 500 billion USD annually. Why should this be the case when adequate cargo securing is such a profitable investment and a cheap precaution? Poor knowledge is probably the main problem, but another reason is that many take a narrow view of the costs of stowage and lashing, instead of seeing them from a wider perspective. Sooner or later, costs will arise somewhere else.

Various regulations exist for cargo securing in containers, depending on the transport mode. If intermodal transport is used, the regulations for each transport mode must be followed. The CTU Code of Practice issued by the IMO is the most central set of regulations. Special regulations exist for hazardous goods. For more detailed information, visit the Mariterm website.

Products you can trust

CornerLash is a product specially designed for cargo securing of heavy loads in containers (up to 30 ton). CornerLash solves the problem with weak lashing points by using the strongest point of the container – the corner posts – to achieve optimum security.
This and other quality products from Cordstrap make it possible for us to offer a unique range of products suitable for cargo securing in containers.

One Way Securing

One Way Securing is a combination of several different products which together create the required cargo securing solution in a container. Apart from lashings and buckles, products like corner protections, friction material, desiccants and dunnage bags are included in the concept.

Prevent moisture damage

Moisture will move in and out of the container during the course of the voyage. By using desiccants you can prevent the buildup of moisture in the air to levels where it may cause damage to the goods.

Prevent accidents when opening container doors

One of the most common accidents in container handling is when the doors are exposed to strong pressure and flies up when the container is opened. With Forankra’s safety strap for containers, which is attached to the container doors before opening, this can be avoided.

Seal your containers before transport

Protect your goods from intruders by sealing your containers with Forankra's bolt seal before transport.
