Labeling of lifting equipment

From 1 January 1995 all lifting equipment must be CE marked. The CE mark is proof that the equipment complies with the EU Machinery Directive. In addition, correct documentation such as instructions for use, a declaration of conformity (DoC) and, where applicable, a certificate, is required.

Labeling on soft lifting equipment

Soft lifting equipment must have a label that indicates the working load limit (WLL) and effective working length (EWL) of the equipment, among other information.

Labeling of chain equipment

The chain must carry an identification tag, which indicates the lifting class, size and whether it is intended for use with multiple parts.

Terminology for lifting products

Lifting angle

When lifting safely, it is always important to make sure that the lifting angle (top angle) of the entire lifting equipment does not exceed 120°. The working angle (angle from vertical) must not exceed 60° in each leg of the lifting equipment.

WLL (Working Load Limit)

WLL specifies the maximum working load of lifting equipment.

EWL (Effective Working Length)

EWL indicates the actual working length of the lifting equipment. For a webbing sling or round sling this is half the circumference.

Working angle 45°, Lifting angle 90°

Working angle 60°, Lifting angle 120°

EWL – Effective Working Length

GUIDELINE TO SAFE LIFTING

Forankra has made a "Guideline to Safe Lifting", where we present important factors to consider in order to ensure safe lifting situations.
