Regulations for lifting equipment
Safe lifting always starts with choosing the right equipment and to make a risk analysis. Lifting products are regulated by the European Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. These products are in most cases manufactured according to standards, which are harmonized with the directive.
The European Machinery Directive 2006/42 / EC sets stricts demands on suppliers of lifting products regarding:
• Requirements on product performance
• Product labeling
• Technical product documentation
• CE marking
• Traceability of products through the value chain
This directive is incorporated into Swedish regulations through AFS 2023:4 (the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s Provisions on Products – Machinery). A revised version of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC was adopted in June 2023, becoming the European Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230. This regulation will apply from 20 January 2027
To prevent accidents and personal injuries related to lifting operations, the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket) has developed regulations that employers are required to be familiar with and comply with.
