The lashing’s ratchet is used to tighten the lashing and create the required tension force (STF). In the case of top over lashing, this tension is absolutely decisive for the securing ability of the lashing. The ratchet's handle is pumped up and down until the desired tension is achieved. The increasing tension force occurs during the upward movement.

An ERGO tensioner has, in addition to a longer handle for increased tension, also reverse tension. This means that the tension force itself increases during the downward movement. This creates a more natural and ergonomic movement for the user.
