Cargo securing with long-distance truck with open cargo carrier

Long-distance trucks with open cargo carriers are among the heaviest types of transport on our roads. The goods that are most often transported on open cargo carriers are machinery such as contracting machines and crushers. The weight of the transported goods makes it especially important that the cargo is correctly secured, as an incorrectly secured cargo could cause a great deal of damage.

Methods and products for cargo securing in long-distance trucks with open cargo carrier

The most widely used method for securing goods on an open cargo carrier is lashing. Products that are often used are lashing chains, load binders and 50–75 mm machine lashings. It can be useful to have wheel lashings for ordinary cars, which also may be transported. In addition corner protection, Multi-Stick, friction mats, stop blocks and webbing winders can be good to have at hand.

Knowhow in Cargo securing

For more information about cargo securing, choosing correct equipment and product labeling, we refer to the section Cargo securing – Knowhow as well as to our “Guideline to Cargo Securing”.

Recommended product groups for cargo securing on open cargo carrier:

 Lashing chain

Load binder

Textile load binder

Machine lashing 75mm

Lashings 50mm

Corner protection and stop

Tips:

• Always check which cargo securing options are available on your cargo carrier.

• Inspect the lashing equipment regularly and check for wear.

• A load binder is basically a large screw inside a long threaded sleeve. If it is cleaned and lubricated regularly, it will work flawlessly for a long time.

Webbing load binders are also available for the smaller lashing chains.

• Use a tension meter to ensure that your lashing straps have the correct tension.

• Make sure you use the correct equipment by referring to the sizing table for lashing chains, based on the weight of the goods.

• The values in the table only apply if the lashing fittings that are used in the cargo carrier have the same lashing capacity (LC) as the lashings themselves. The values in the table only apply if the angles are between 30° and 60° in all directions.

When the lashing chain is used together with a load binder, they form a chain lashing. Chain lashing is most often used for cargo securing of heavy machinery and vehicles on an open cargo carrier.

How to use a chain lashing:

1. The hooks of the lashing chain are attached to the designated brackets. Leftover chain is collected.

2.  The load binder's hooks are attached to each side of the "leftover chain" by placing a link in the hook. The lashing is then tightened with the ratchet shaft of the chain tensioner.

3. The shaft also has a switch for tightening/loosening.

Example of dimension tables for chain lashing

There are several methods of securing cargo, such as lashing, blocking or locking (or a combination of these). The information in the tables below are examples of chain lashing applications and usually needs to be supplemented with other measures. So always use a suitable cargo securing guide for advice when securing goods. This will explain what is needed to ensure reliable straight/cross lashing, additional measures and vital information about the coefficient of friction (μ) between goods and the cargo floor.

8 mm chain lashing "Load binder" LC4000 daN (40 kN)

Load in tons that a single 8 mm load binder can prevent from slipping (at the correct angles, i.e. between 30 and 60° in all directions) by straight/cross lashing.

NOTE! The values in the table only apply if the lashing fittings that are used in the cargo carrier have the same lashing capacity (LC) as the lashings themselves.

10 mm chain lashing "Load binder" LC4000 daN (40 kN)

Load in tons that a single 10 mm load binder can prevent from slipping (at the correct angles, i.e. between 30 and 60° in all directions) by straight/cross lashing.

NOTE! The values in the table only apply if the lashing fittings that are used in the cargo carrier have the same lashing capacity (LC) as the lashings themselves.
